Here are many exciting things to do in Arugam Bay, located on the east coast of Sri Lanka. It is one of the country’s top surf destinations. After spending several days here, its charm and relaxed beach vibe quickly won us over. Beyond the trendy eateries and boutique shops, the laid-back atmosphere was what made Arugam Bay truly special. With numerous beaches perfect for surfing and plenty of other activities, it’s definitely worth the journey east, even if it’s a bit off the beaten path.
We initially thought we could surf anytime, as Arugam Bay is famous for its waves. However, we visited in March when the waves were scarce. The best swell season runs from July to September, aligning with the hotter, drier months. This period also marks the peak tourist season. Up until March, the area usually experiences wet and rainy weather, which is why many restaurants were still closed when we were there. Despite the quieter off-season, Arugam Bay’s unique charm makes it a fantastic destination year-round.
